Tell us more about yourself.
My name is Sylvie and I’m 29 years old this year. I am a wife, a mother of a nine months old baby, named Chloe, and the co-founder of Nutchies.
How and Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I grew up in an environment where both my parents are involved in the family business. Growing up, I helped out as a cashier serving customers and listened on to my parent’s conversations on business talks. I got intrigued by the fascinating conversations. With the hopes of opening a business with my loved one, Nutchies was finally launched! Together with my husband, Kenneth, we put our hard work into the company and build Nutchies from scratch. The results we achieved were satisfying, especially after receiving compliments from our customers.
Who inspires you?
My parents. Both of them are very hardworking and have expanded the family business from a small chain to several branches back in Indonesia. Despite having a busy schedule, my parents always make it a commitment to spend time with me on the weekends when I was young. I look up to them and they are the ones who taught me the ropes of the business trade.
How did Nutchies come about?
Nutchies actually began as a side business. During market testing, we set up pushcarts at Raffles Exchange and the responses were well received. Realising the potential, we started to put in more effort and focus on growing Nutchies. It’s been close to two years since and the business is still growing.
How did you balance your life between your role as a mum and an entrepreneur?
You need to set your priorities right. If there are any urgent business matters, set a deadline and understand what's important. I create a to-do-list to keep track of the tasks I need to complete. Of course, I place my family as the top priority. They are the motivations that keep me going.
Do you have any advice for female entrepreneurs or young mums to starting a business?
Never be afraid to fail and step out of your comfort zone. Just try to do it and be like a ball. Every time I experience a setback, I need to bounce back like a ball.
How did you take care of yourself despite your busy schedule?
I never. Seriously! Jokes aside, once you become mum, all mothers would understand that you have no time for yourself. The only time I have is probably past midnight after putting my baby to sleep and finishing up work and household chores. I will take that time to relax before going to bed at two a.m.
Are there any last words to encourage women?
If you have anything in mind, don’t be afraid to start because you never know if it can be a success. If you meet any setbacks along the way, don’t be discouraged. The key is to stay positive and persevere in what you do. Every effort that you put in counts. So, even if it’s the highest mountain, you can conquer it.
Last questions, describe yourself in three words.
Family-oriented, loving & caring, and focus minded. When I have a goal, I will definitely strive to achieve it.
